OIL TANK REMOVALS Currently, there is no law stating that a homeowner must remove and underground storage tank from their property. However, if you are going to sell your property, mortgage companies may require documentation that a tank has been removed or abandoned. An underground storage tank can either be removed or legally abandoned (when necessary). The tank removal must be done by a licensed contractor. A permit must be pulled and the fee must be paid prior to the day of the tank removal. We need a minimum of 72 hours notice for the removal/abandonment, as the Fire Marshal must be on site to witness the removal/abandonment and taking of the soil sample by the contractor. No tanks shall be removed prior to Fire Marshal arrival, no exceptions. A copy of the soil analysis report shall be sent to the Fire Marshal’s Office for our records. PLAN REVIEWS
The Trumbull Fire Marshal’s Office reviews all plans for new commercial construction in town, as well as plans for any renovations to existing commercial buildings to ensure compliance with the Connecticut State Fire Safety Code. This review process may take up to thirty (30) days to complete. Once plans are received and the proper fees are paid, a marshal will review the plans and a plan review checklist is completed and sent to the architect or general contractor for review. When plans are corrected per the plan review comments, the permit can be released by the Building Department and construction can begin. OPEN BURN PERMITS
Open burning is allowed only when issued a permit by the Fire Marshal’s Office. Permits can be obtained between the hours of 8a.m. and 4p.m. Monday through Friday. Once a burn permit has been applied for, a member of the Fire Marshal’s Office will set up a time to go and inspect the site where the burning will take place and go over rules and regulations. Burning must take place in an open area where there is an adequate water supply available. Only brush, no greater than 3 inches in diameter, may be burned. The burning of grass, leaves, construction material, trash or other debris is PROHIBITED. Open burning will not be allowed when the Air Quality Index is rated Unhealthy or Very Unhealthy, when the Forest Fire Danger Index is rated High or greater. FIRE TAXES
