The Trumbull Police Department is comprised of 75 sworn officers and has the following divisions which provide opportunity for varied interests:
  • Patrol Division
  • Traffic Division
  • Detective Bureau
  • Records Division
  • Dive Team
  • Emergency Response Team

The Trumbull Police Department...

  • Serves 35,000 residents and an average daytime population of over 100,000.
  • Responded to 21,553 calls for service in 2006.
  • Has both indoor and outdoor ranges for weapons training.
  • Trains all officers in ice and water rescue.

Minimum Qualifications

At the time of employment the applicant must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen and resident of Connecticut
  • Be Age 21 upon appointment, Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License
  • Be a Non-smoker
  • Be a High school graduate or equivalent (2 years of higher education, 2 years full active military duty, or P.O.S.T. Certified with 2 years full-time experience preferred)
  • Have no felony convictions
  • Have no motor vehicle conviction for Evading Responsibilty or Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs or both
  • Be CHIP Certified at time of application (visit www.PoliceApp.com for a CHIP Physical Ability Assessment packet)

Selection Process

The selection process consists of multiple phases. Candidates must successfully pass each phase in order to proceed through the process. The testing phases are listed below (these are subject to change without notice).

  • Written Entry-Level Examination (Note: At this time, we do not have an exam scheduled.)
  • Oral Panel Examination
  • Polygraph test
  • An intense and thorough background examination
  • Psychological test
  • Police commission review board
  • Complete medical examination and drug screening test
  • Field training probationary period

Applicants who pass all of the above testing and are then selected for employment must successfully complete recruit training conducted at a certified Connecticut Police Academy. Recruits may be required to spend approximately 5 months at the Police Academy.  Once recruits successfully pass the Police Academy training, they enter the Trumbull Police Department Field Training Program that lasts a minimum of 12 weeks. New officers are on probationary status for at least one year from appointment.

  • Annual Salary: Per the current contract, an Officer's starting salary is $42,314 which increases to $54,528 after 12 months and $59,305 after 24 months.
