Summer Reading Program

Tails & Tales: Summer Reading 2021

June 19 - August 15

READSquared Summer Reading Website | Children's Summer Reading Program Rules

Once upon a time on a beautiful day in June, you decide to take a walk in the forest alone. As you wander along the path, you spot a fluffy white cat. The cat meows at you, so you stop and pet his head. POOF! You feel yourself shrink and sprout fur. The cat runs off and you run home.

When you arrive home, it takes a lot of meow-ing and hissing, but eventually your family realizes that the cat standing in their living room is YOU!

It’s okay though. Being a cat is fun! Sort of. After a few days though, you miss human food, like pizza and ice cream. You miss hanging out with your friends. You miss having thumbs and being able to speak!

Your family takes you to the witch that lives in town and asks her to turn you back into a human. The witch gazes at you suspiciously. She doesn’t believe you were really once a human! You have the next eight weeks of summer to prove you really are a kid by reading and completing other fun human activities. Once you complete enough, the witch will turn you back.

Good luck! If you need help turning the pages of the books you read, I’m sure your family will help…

Independent Readers

(For ages 5-12. Kids aged 12 can choose between Independent Readers and Teen, but can only participate in one.)

Once you earn 1,120 points, not only will you be turned back into a human, but you'll also earn a free book. Earn points by reading and completing activities. One minute of reading equals one point. 60 points equals one raffle ticket. Different activities are worth different amounts of points.

You can read anything you want to earn points. Picture books, chapter books, audiobooks, ebooks, graphic novels, and rereads all count. Read out loud to a sibling, or listen to someone read out loud to you. Just don't forget to log the number of minutes you read! Including the title and author of the books you read are optional.

Every Saturday, there are five new activities to complete. These activities will demonstrate that you are a creative, kind, mindful, and knowledgeable person and definitely not a cat. Write a book review, perform a random act of kindness, practice mindfulness, and answer animal trivia questions. You can also participate in a weekly scavenger hunt at the library.

Use your points to purchase raffle tickets. There are twelve prize packs to choose from. View the list or see the prizes in person at the Trumbull Library!

Pre-readers

(For ages 0-5. Children aged 5 can choose between Pre-readers and Independent Readers, but can only participate in one.)

Once you earn 1,120 points, not only will you be turned back into a human, but you'll also earn a free book. Earn points by reading and completing activities. You will earn a point for every minute someone reads out loud to you. This can be a parent, sibling, friend, or librarian. It could even be an audiobook or Wonderbook. 30 points equals one raffle ticket. Different activities are worth different amounts of points.

Every Saturday, there are five new activities to complete. These activities will demonstrate that you are a person learning how to read and definitely not a cat. The theme of four of the activities are Write, Sing, Play, and Talk. These are four of the five early literacy activities adults can do with their children to help them get ready to read. (Read is the fifth!) You can also participate in a weekly scavenger hunt at the library.

Use your points to purchase raffle tickets. There are twelve prize packs to choose from. See the prizes in person at the Trumbull Library!

Sunday, August 15 is the last day to log your reading, complete activities, and purchase raffle tickets.
