03/12/2020: Trumbull Senior Center to Close Due to Coronavirus

Senior Center at Priscilla Place

First Selectman Vicki Tesoro, along with Public Health Director, Luci Bango, has announced that beginning Friday March 13, 2020,  the Trumbull Senior Center will close to the public due to the health risks posed by the novel corona virus (COVID-19). The closure will affect all programs, except for the food pantry, until further notice. Participants in the senior nutrition meal program, which provides subsidized meals for seniors 60 years or older, will be contacted and offered assistance.

As you know, the novel coronavirus has made its way into Connecticut.  The CDC advises that older adults over 60, and those with underlying health issues such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, or compromised immune systems, should avoid being around others who are sick, avoid crowds as much as possible, and should there be an outbreak in the community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce the risk of exposure.

“The safety of our seniors is our top priority.  Although we recognize that many of the seniors we serve count on the center for socialization, exercise, and a nutritious meal, we are following the guidelines of the CDC, and we believe it is the right thing to do at this time. We hope to avoid any possible exposure to any of our senior center members and staff,” stated Director of the Senior Center, Michele Jakab.

What preparations you should take:

  • -Have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period of time.
  • -Have 30 days of prescription medications available. Make sure your prescriptions are filled and you have over the counter medications you need.
  • -If you or a loved one has a paid caregiver, determine a back-up plan-- is there someone else that can help you if your caregiver gets sick or cannot get to your home.
  • Avoid crowds as much as possible.

The Town continues to monitor all operations and is reviewing future events as well so that adjustments can be made if necessary. The Senior Center can be reached at (203) 452-5199 for any additional information.
