On Friday, January 13, 2023, Trumbull Police arrested three teenagers after they sped away from police in a stolen car, and then fled on foot when they were involved in a crash in Fairfield. A sixteen (16) year old boy from Norwich, a fifteen (15) year old girl from Stratford, and a fourteen (14) year old boy also from Stratford were all arrested and charged for their involvement in this incident.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., an officer who was patrolling the parking lot of the Trumbull Mall observed a Kia Optima, bearing a New York registration plate, that had been reported stolen earlier that day out of New York City.
As the officer proceeded to follow the Kia, the car exited the mall and drove through nearby residential streets in an attempt to lose the officer. The car continued Westerly on Old Town Road, then turned Southerly on Park Avenue, where it accelerated at a high rate of speed. Near the entrance of Sacred Heart University, the Kia struck another vehicle and the center median, then ran off the road where it hit a tree. All four (4) occupants then exited the stolen vehicle and ran from police. Both Bridgeport and Fairfield Police were notified to respond to the area to assist in locating the suspects.
The initial officer apprehended the sixteen (16) year old male suspect, and a Trumbull Police K9 tracked down the fifteen (15) year old girl suspect as she was lying in a wooded area between nearby houses. The fourteen (14) year old boy was apprehended by Fairfield Police near Sacred Heart University, and he was found to be carrying a large kitchen knife in his possession. The fourth suspect was not apprehended.
The fifteen (15) year old girl sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident, so AMR Ambulance responded for treatment and then transported her to St. Vincent’s Hospital. No other injuries were reported.
All three (3) teens were charged with Larceny in the First Degree and Interfering with Police. The fourteen (14) year old boy was additionally charged with Carrying a Dangerous Weapon.
All three were later released to the custody of their guardians on a Promise to Appear in court on January 30, 2023. The fifteen (15) year old girl, and fourteen (14) year old boy are scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Juvenile Court, and the sixteen (16) year old boy is scheduled to appear in Norwich Juvenile Court.
