On Saturday, March 4, 2023 Trumbull Police arrested a local man after he pointed a loaded handgun at another motorist while they were in the parking lot of Target on Hawley Lane. Robert Butler, age 27, of Trumbull Avenue, Bridgeport was arrested and charged regarding his involvement in this incident.

At about 3:00 P.M., the Trumbull Police were called to 120 Hawley Lane for a report of a road rage incident involving a firearm. Arriving officers met with the complainant who stated that as they were driving through the Target parking lot, a vehicle operated by Butler attempted to cut them off. Butler pulled his vehicle next to the complainant’s vehicle when words were exchanged between both operators. Butler then pointed the barrel of his firearm at the other motorist, and he then left the area. Butler also called the police to report the incident, and he returned to the scene a short time later.

Butler told police that when he was stopped in his vehicle, he was almost struck from behind by the other vehicle. The other vehicle then pulled next to his vehicle and stopped. Butler stated that was when the other operator pointed towards Butler, but he could not see what the other operator was holding. Butler stated that was when he pulled out his gun that was stored inside of his backpack, when it was observed by the complainant.

Officers recovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun from Butler’s backpack that was on the passenger’s seat of his vehicle. The firearm had eight (8) 9mm bullets in the magazine, and there was

one (1) 9mm bullet loose inside of the backpack. No other firearms were located and no injuries were reported regarding this incident.

Butler was charged with Threatening 1st degree, Breach of Peace 2nd degree, and was held on a $20,000 bond. Butler is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on March 13, 2023.
