11/02 - 3:00 PM: Public Safety Update

This is First Selectman Tim Herbst with an important public safety update.

I realize that residents are frustrated and there is a perception that service is slow to respond to their needs. Be assured that Town, UI, and National Guard crews are working to ensure road ways are cleared and safe to allow power restoration to proceed as quickly and expediently as possible.

Residents may feel the need to take on responsibilities that are beyond their capabilities to repair their homes and property. Please think about the tasks you need to accomplish, especially tree removal and working from elevated areas. A mistake or a fall could result in sustaining an injury that could cause injury or death! Do not take on a task better left to a professional.

While residents may need to rely on a professional contractor, it is important for residents to be aware of scams that follow events such as this.

People may knock on your door offering to clear away fallen tree branches, cut up downed trees, or repair damage to your home.

The following is a list of helpful tips to guide you through your recovery process:

  • Do not give out personal information to anyone knocking on your door.
  • Never offer money up front for services. Wait until the job is completed or you may never see your money or the worker again.
  • Home improvement contractors must be registered with the State and offer a contract with a three day right of cancellation. Ask for copies of their insurance and registration paperwork.
  • Tree cutters do not need a license but you should only hire a reputable company, especially one that carries insurance on its workers.
  • Get at least three estimates on the work needed.
  • Alarms: Only deal with a clearly identified employee of your alarm company if you are experiencing problems.
  • Be mindful of charity scams.

This is First Selectman Tim Herbst. I will be back in touch later this evening with an additional update.
