News from the First Selectman - October 2024

First Selectman Vicki Tesoro sitting at desk

A Message from First Selectman Vicki A. Tesoro

Thank you to everyone in Trumbull who voted over the last couple of weeks. Early voting was very successful in Trumbull, which helped prevent long lines at our regular polling locations on election day, November 5th.

Thank you to all our poll workers who worked tirelessly to provide an easy voting experience. Thank you also to everyone who ran for office and congratulations to all those who were elected.

I'm happy to report that on Election Day, voters overwhelmingly approved the referendum question concerning construction of a new Hillcrest Middle School. The question was whether to approve the appropriation and bond authorization of $142,375,000 for planning, design and construction of a new Hillcrest Middle School.

Official results show that the question was approved by a vote of 14,183 to 6,673.

While the estimated cost of this new school is $142,375,000, the Town anticipates receipt of grants from the State of Connecticut of approximately $59,795,000, representing reimbursement of approximately 44% of eligible project expenses.   The estimated cost to Trumbull taxpayers, therefore, will be $82,580,000.

The Town Council has already created a building committee to plan and oversee the project. The building committee can now commence work on the project. You will be able to follow the process by visiting the town website where updates and information on Town meetings will be provided.

As the holiday season approaches, I want to wish everyone a happy and joyful Thanksgiving with your family and friends!

Ban on Open Burning

Strict Open Burn/Fire Ban in Place Until Further Notice

A strict burn ban is currently in effect for the Town of Trumbull and all burning permits are suspended until further notice. The ban includes any type of open burning, the use of fire pits, and outdoor grilling. This ban extends to all firework activity as well.

Recently, Governor Ned Lamont declared a State of Emergency as a result of dry and windy weather conditions. An emergency burn ban is currently in effect for all Connecticut State Parks, forests, and wildlife management areas. The State Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and local agencies are working to contain several active fires across the State.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Leaf Pick-Up Has Begun!

It's that time of year again! As the vibrant colors of autumn begin to fade, the Town of Trumbull’s annual leaf collection started on November 4th. Each year, the starting point rotates to ensure that all four quadrants receive equal attention and have enough time to rake their leaves to the curb. This year, the program will begin in the Southeast quadrant, generally south of Strobel Road, and will overlap the starting point once.

Crews may be seen throughout the town earlier as they test equipment and prepare for the official start. These areas will be serviced again during their designated sector operations.

The leaf collection program runs throughout November and into December, allowing for at least one full sweep of the town before the snow season begins. New vacuum street sweepers have replaced the older manual loader leaf vacuums, making the operation more efficient.

For more specific information and daily progress maps, please refer to the town website.

Pollinator Pathway

Successful Pollinator Pathway Event

In August, Sustainable Trumbull hosted a Pollinator Pathway signup event with more than 50 households taking part.  The promotion asked that homes join the Pollinator Pathway with a donation, for which they received a yard sign and a selection of native plants. The plants were furnished by Wakeman's White Birch Nursery and delivered at an event in September. We were encouraged by the enthusiasm in town for the promotion, and are considering making this a recurring event, with the next one in spring 2025.
