Sarah Davino LCSW

Get to know to our new counselor. Welcome Sarah Davino, LCSW

When did you join MJSCC? My first day at the Mary J. Sherlock counseling center was December 1st.

Licensing: I have a license in Clinical Social Work (LCSW).

Specialty/focus: My therapy focus is integrative, combining techniques from multiple approaches to address both current concerns and past experiences, with treatment tailored to each individual’s needs. I also specialize in family and couples therapy, helping relationships improve communication, resolve conflict, and strengthen connections.

Educational history to include internships: I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Social Work, both from the University of Connecticut. During my studies, I completed an internship at Kennedy High School in Waterbury and gained hands-on experience through two programs with Waterbury Youth Services: a safe home for abused and neglected children, and a transitional program supporting DCF-committed teens in securing housing, education, and employment as they moved into adulthood.

Brief employment history: Before joining MJSCC, I spent nearly 10 years in private practice. With over 20 years in the mental health field, I have experience across diverse treatment modalities and populations. My work has included supporting individuals with schizophrenia at Hartford Hospital’s Institute of Living, facilitating groups in an inpatient substance use rehabilitation facility in Danbury, and providing individual and family therapy for DCF-referred children in their homes and schools.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Troy, NY (known for being the birthplace of Uncle Sam), and spent summers and most weekends in Connecticut with my father.

Where do you live and with who? I’ve lived in Naugatuck for the past 19 years where I raised my three sons as a single mother. Two of which are still at home.

Interests outside of work? Outside of work, I enjoy staying active through aerial fitness, biking, and swimming. I also love exploring my creative side through painting, getting lost in a good book, and spending quality time with friends and family.

Favorite movie: I’m neutral when it comes to most things and don’t have any particular “favorites”. I appreciate films across many genres, particularly those with compelling storytelling and an unexpected ending.

Favorite book: I don’t have a favorite book, but I usually enjoy ones that make me think or see things differently. I am currently reading The Long Walk by Stephen King.

Are News Year’s resolutions good for your mental health? Resolutions or goals can be beneficial no matter when you make them. What matters isn’t the calendar date, but the intention and approach. Setting meaningful, realistic goals can improve focus, motivation, and a sense of accomplishment at any time.

What do you tell clients to set themselves up for a positive and happy New Year? Instead of strict resolutions, focus on small, meaningful changes, stay kind to yourself, and make time for the people and activities that bring you joy. Celebrate progress, not perfection, and any day can be a fresh start.
