Community Volunteer Fair Saturday, May 3rd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Looking to make a difference in your community? Join us for an inspiring event that connects you with 22 local organizations eager for your support. Discover opportunities to make a difference in Fairfield County and explore volunteer roles that align with your passions. Students – explore opportunities and volunteer credit hours that can enhance your academic journey while making a positive impact on the world around you. No registration required—simply drop by the Community Room.

Star Wars Day – Movie Sunday, May 4th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. It's Star Wars Day ("May the Fourth Be With You"), so join us for a showing of the first movie from 1977: "Star Wars: A New Hope." Themed refreshments will be provided, and we encourage you to dress up either in a full costume or just your favorite Star Wars t-shirt. We'll also have a "selfie station" with props that you can take photos with, which will be available before, during, and after the movie. And consider sticking around after the movie for our costume contest. Register here. 

Star Wars Day – Costume Contest Sunday, May 4th from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In honor of Star Wars Day ("May the Fourth Be With You"), we're having a costume contest. Come dressed as your favorite character or species from the Star Wars universe. We'll divide participants into age groups and the winner from each will get a prize. We'll also have a Star Wars "selfie station," with props that you can take photos with, available 1 p.m.-5 p.m. And consider arriving before the contest to join our showing of A New Hope. Nonfiction Book Group Wednesday, May 7th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Consider this your invitation to read and discuss nonfiction! We read a wide variety of popular fiction and across the genres of nonfiction. May’s book selection is How Democracies Die by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. Register here. 

Drop-in Game Night Wednesday, May 7th from Looking for some new board game buddies? Curious to try out different games? Stop by and play games like Scattergories, Cranium, Chess. Bring a friend, and feel free to bring your own game to teach. No registration necessary,  but encouraged – drop in with the family to explore tabletop games at the library.
Self-Care for Mental Health Wednesday, May 7th from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Join us as we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month with an interactive Self-Care workshop, hosted by Mental Health Connecticut, Inc (MHC). Learn stress management techniques and healthy habits that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Together, we'll challenge the outdated idea that self-care is a luxury and embrace it as an essential practice for a healthier, more resilient community. Register here. 

Adult Fiction Book Club Thursday, May 8th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Join us as we discuss The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. We have a limited amount of copies of this month's book available for check out at the main branch circulation desk. Register here. 

SCORE: Using LinkedIn to Grow Your Business Thursday, May 8th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Many people think they don't have time for LinkedIn even when they understand it is an important social media tool. However, using LinkedIn for the win may be all you need to build, engage, and grow your business. Learn how to make the magic happen by: Making LinkedIn profiles client attractive; Making the time you spend on LinkedIn manageable for you; Learning how to reach out to your target market; and applying growth hacking strategies. Silent Book Club Thursday, May 8th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Do you have trouble making time to read? Is your home full of distractions? Are you an introvert who still enjoys a chance to get out of the house? If any of these situations apply to you, come to a meeting of our own chapter of Silent Book Club. Unlike a traditional book club, there are no assigned readings and no deadlines. Bring a book of your own choosing, or pick out a new one at the library, and we’ll have an hour of silent reading time together. Light refreshments will also be provided, and you can also bring your own snacks or music to listen to (with headphones). Register here. 

Puzzle Competition Saturday, May 10th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. We invite you to join us for a competitive puzzle event at the main library! At this event there will be teams of up to four people. Every team will receive the same 500-piece puzzle and have 2 hours to complete it. If at the end of the two hours no one has finished, the team with the fewest remaining loose pieces will be crowned our winner. If you are registering with a team, please register everyone at once. If you are registering with less than four people, you may be combined with another team. Spectators are allowed but will need to remain behind a designated line in the room or teams will face a time penalty. Register here. 

CHILDRENS

New Baby Meet-up Tuesday, May 6th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your infant to the library for a casual meet-up and informal baby story time with other new parents. A perfect opportunity to meet other new parents, chat, compare experiences, find parenting resources, and get out with your new baby. We will serve light refreshments. No registration required. 

Chapter Chatter Book Club Tuesday, May 6th from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Join Miss Katie for the new 3-5 grade book club, Chapter Chatter! We will meet monthly on Tuesdays at 6PM to discuss that month's pick. The first ten children registered may pick up a library copy of that month's pick! May's pick is Mystery on Magnolia Circle by Kate Klise. Register here. 

All CT Reads Book Club (Grades 4-6) Wednesday, May 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. We have finished our books and our final meeting will be a discussion and pizza. We can share what we liked or what we didn’t like about our book choices. Register here. 

Miss Claudia Sings a Story Friday, May 9th from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Join Miss Claudia for a musical storytime! Ages 2-5. Younger/Older siblings welcome. Registration is not required.

Mother's Day Crafternoon Saturday, May 10th from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Drop in to make a Mother's Day card with Miss Katie! All material provided. All ages welcome. Registration is NOT required, but you may register if you would like a reminder email.

TEEN PROGRAMMING

Middle Grade Study Strategies Tuesday, May 13th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Does your child struggle with test taking? Worried about upcoming finals? Join us as C2 Education presents this program on studying tips and tricks & effective note taking skills. There will also be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation. This program is for grades 5-8 and their guardians. Registration is requested. 

Teen ArtClub Wednesday, May 14th from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. During art club, teens will have the option to either work on a special art project that will be determined each month or they can bring in their own personal projects from home. Teens are encouraged, but not required, to bring their sketch books to share with other members. For teens ages 12-17. Register here. 

How to Build Your College Profile Wednesday, May 21st from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Join us as Collegewise counselor Matt Doyle discusses how college applications are evaluated, and some tips and tricks to help boost your academic and extracurricular profiles throughout high school. This program is geared toward high school students and their parents/guardians. Registration is requested for email reminders. 

Sharing Stitches Yarn Crafts Group (Grades 6-8) Saturday, May 24th from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. If you are in middle school and you enjoy crocheting and/or knitting, this is the group for you. Come and work on projects, compare styles, and chat. Registration is required. Each participant must register.

Fairchild Nichols

Tiny Tales 2s, 3s and 4s Tuesday, May 6th from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Come join Miss Niki for story time! We will have a little bit of stories a little bit of music and a show stopping craft. Registration required. Ages 2-4.

Namaste Yoga for "Littles" Wednesday, May 7th from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Join Krista Boyer for a fun, interactive yoga class for children ages 3 to 6. Bring a mat or towel, bring a water bottle, wear your comfortable clothes and join us for a "zen" 45 minutes of relaxation for your little ones and their caregivers. No previous yoga experience required. Please register with us online. 

Adult Craft Time: Watercolor Bookmark Wednesday, May 7th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Join us to make your own set of two bookmarks. One to keep and one to give to a friend! Put in permanent sleeves or laminate. Age 16 and up. Register here. 

Video Game Club Night Monday, May 12th from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Do you like Nintendo Switch? Are you a pro at XBOX Series S? Have you ever wanted to try the Meta Universe? What about original video games that your parents played as kids? Join us at the Fairchild Nichols library and try them all!  All neurodivergent and neurotypical tweens and teens welcome. Ages 11 to 17. Register here.

Fairchild FAMILY Storytime Saturday, May 10th from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Come join Miss Niki for a little bit of stories, a little bit of music, and a little bit of playtime. Drop In. Ages 2-7. Siblings Welcomed!
iPhone, Android, iPad, Laptop...OH MY! Saturday, May 10th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Do you have a love hate relationship with your devices? Do you wish they were as easy to use as you thought they would be? Drop in and have our tech "guru" help you set up, delete, or just answer any questions you might have. All Ages. Drop in, registration not required.
