  • “Fine-free” means the library no longer charges overdue fines for most circulating materials. Patrons can return items late without accruing daily penalties, though replacement fees for lost or damaged items still apply. The library will still charge late fees for certain items like museum passes ($5/day), the Toniebox ($5/day), Tonies ($.15/day), and Interlibrary Loans ($.50/day).

  • Fine-free does not mean consequence-free. Lost or damaged items are still billed.

  • Accounts will be blocked after 14 days. At that point:

    • The item is considered “lost”
    • A replacement fee is billed
    • Borrowing privileges are suspended until the item is returned
    • Access to our digital collections (e.g.Libby, Hoopla) is blocked

Once the item is returned, the replacement fee is waived and borrowing privileges and access to our digital collections are restored.

    Library Fine-Free
  • Old overdue fines will be waived from your account. Only damaged or lost fines will remain.

    Library Fine-Free
  • Fine-free policies help reduce barriers to library access, particularly for low-income residents, children and families, and seniors on fixed incomes. Research has shown that overdue fines can discourage library use without significantly improving return rates. By removing fines, libraries can make services more accessible while maintaining accountability for borrowed materials.

    Library Fine-Free
  • Most libraries that go fine-free report little to no negative impact on return rates. Many actually see improved returns and re-engagement from patrons who had previously stopped using the library. Evidence shows that most patrons value library materials and return items responsibly. Fine-free policies tend to build trust rather than reduce accountability.
