Working with hundreds of food pantries, community organizations, and social service agencies, the organization helps ensure that people facing food insecurity have reliable access to healthy, nutritious food. FILLING IN THE BLANKS, INC

volunteer@fillingintheblanks.org

Filling in the Blanks is a Norwalk-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to combating childhood hunger by providing weekend meals to children in need throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties.

Founded in 2013 by two local mothers, the organization partners with more than   80 schools to deliver bags filled with shelf-stable, easy-to-prepare food directly to students, ensuring they have nourishment when school meals are unavailable. Through strong community partnerships and volunteer support, Filling in the Blanks has distributed more than three million meals to children across the region. Their work focuses on addressing the weekend meal gap so that students have consistent access to food, helping them stay healthy, focused, and ready to learn.

Volunteers play a critical role in making these programs possible, contributing roughly 300 volunteer hours each week to support packing and distribution efforts. Most volunteer shifts take place at the organization’s warehouse in Norwalk, where volunteers help assemble thousands of meal bags that are delivered to partner schools each week. Packing events are typically held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with volunteers joining an assembly-line style packing process that allows large numbers of meals to be prepared efficiently.

This is an active volunteer opportunity that involves standing for extended periods and lifting light boxes of food.

Additional volunteer opportunities are available through the organization’s Mobile Food Pantry program, which serves hundreds of families each week by bringing fresh, nutritious food directly to communities in need. Mobile Pantry volunteers assist with setting up distribution sites, organizing food supplies, and helping distribute groceries to families in an outdoor setting. Corporate groups and teams are also welcome to participate in organized packing events as a team-building activity that supports the organization’s mission.

Warehouse packing volunteers must be at least 14 years old, while Mobile Pantry volunteers must be 21 or older. More experienced volunteers may also take on leadership roles such as Lead Packer, Packing Assistant, or Teen Helper, helping coordinate packing events and guide new volunteers.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF GREATER BRIDGEPORT

literacyvolunteersofbridgeport@gmail.com

For more than 30 years Literacy Volunteers of Greater Bridgeport has been leveraging the power of volunteer tutors to enable adult learners to reach their learning goals. Based in the Bridgeport Public Library and serving the greater Bridgeport area, our organization matches adult students with volunteer tutors who meet weekly in area libraries. Our students want to learn English, improve their basic reading, writing, and/or math skills, pass the US Citizenship exam, or earn a high school diploma through the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). Thanks to our tutors, our students acquire the literacy skills necessary to succeed as employees, as parents participating in their children’s education, and as members of their community.

Our major need is for volunteer tutors. Our students receive free tutoring in a small group setting, for about two hours per week, provided by adults who generously volunteer their time. The amount of tutoring we can offer depends entirely on the number of tutors we have.

Tutors must be 18 years of age or older, have at least a high school diploma, and speak English fluently. They do not need teaching experience or knowledge of another language — but they should be curious, caring, open to learning about other cultures, and committed to lifelong learning. We provide tutors with training, teaching materials, and ongoing support.

Because we do not require prior teaching experience, we ask tutors to participate in training, either in person or online, so that they feel comfortable and confident in working with students.

A National Historic Landmark since 1971, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is an award-winning institution and regarded as one of the earliest and most significant Second Empire Style country houses in the United States. This historic house features interiors and furnishings by such notable designers as the Herter Brothers, Léon Marcotte, and George Platt. Following Lockwood’s untimely death in 1872, Charles Drelincourt Mathews, a wealthy merchant from New York, purchased the Mansion as a summer home for his wife, Rebecca, and their four children. Their eldest son, Charles T. Mathews, is known to have designed the Lady Chapel in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, NYC. The City of Norwalk purchased the property in 1941. The Trumbull Democratic Town Committee is dedicated to the principles of the U.S. Democratic Party, and to stand for all people, without regard to race, gender, religion, age, disability, economic circumstances or other characteristics. We are committed to the town's quality of life, to be fully accessible to all residents, to encourage full participation in the electoral process and to develop, nominate and elect to local, state and national office highly qualified candidates who share our vision.

We need volunteers to support our engagement efforts - working on voter outreach, volunteering at an informational program, attending Town Council or other town meetings. We also ask volunteers to learn about and follow issues important to the town, like the budget process, proposed new commercial developments, the new Hillcrest School proposal, and/or the Senior Community Center.

For students and teens we offer opportunities for civic engagement. There are opportunities to assist at Food Drives that benefit local charities and the Tidy Up Trumbull program of the Trumbull Community Women.  We are always looking for students to volunteer at events like Trumbull Day and the Trumbull Art Fair. Students can also write postcards, canvass and call voters on specific issues.

TRUMBULL HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The Trumbull Health Department Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is a youth volunteer program for teens ages 14–18 who attend Trumbull schools and are interested in making a difference in their community. TAG promotes the importance of prevention and public health among teens by organizing events designed for middle and high school students. Members meet monthly during the school year to plan service projects and advise health department staff on teen-focused programming.

The group’s greatest need is for volunteers to assist with community events throughout the year. These include educational and outreach events that focus on teen health and wellness in Trumbull.

TAG offers a range of opportunities for student volunteers, including helping with the Health Department’s public health summer day camp, flu vaccination clinics, and seasonal community events.

Founded in 1964, the Trumbull Rotary Club is part of Rotary International, a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, and leaders dedicated to service above self. Based in Trumbull, Connecticut, our club brings together local professionals and community members who are passionate about making a positive difference both locally and around the world.

Trumbull Rotary leads and supports numerous community initiatives, including literacy programs for students, scholarships, food insecurity efforts, veterans and first responder support, and youth leadership development. Through hands-on service  projects and fundraising events, we strive to strengthen our community and improve lives.

Our volunteers serve food to the hungry, work a food tent at the carnival to raise money for scholarships for Trumbull students, work tirelessly on various fund raisers.

Our volunteers  play an active, hands-on role in strengthening our community through service projects, events, and outreach initiatives. Opportunities range from occasional event support to ongoing leadership roles, allowing individuals to contribute based on their interests and availability.

Each year students are encouraged to participate in any of our events from senior picnic to the food tent at the carnival. We help numerous students every year meet their volunteer goals. Many come back year after year before graduation.
