[ARCHIVED] 2020-10-26 Important Election Update

Town of Trumbull Seal

Good Afternoon,

This is First Selectman Vicki Tesoro with an important Election update:

Town Hall will be closed on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3rd except for the Town Clerk's office, the Registrars' Office and Council Chambers for Election Day Registration. All other Town Hall employees will be working remotely on November 3rd.

The last date to pre-register to vote in the November 3rd election is tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27th.

The Registrars' office in Town Hall will be open from 9 AM to 8 PM tomorrow, October 27th for in-person registration.

All mail-in voter registration applications must be received or post-marked by October 27th in order to be accepted. This is also the deadline to register to vote using the On Line Voter Registration System. https://voterregistration.ct.gov/OLVR/welcome.do

There will be a LIMITED REGISTRATION SESSION THE LAST WEEKDAY BEFORE the ELECTION on Monday, November 2nd. This session of the Registrars of Voters is to admit those seeking to vote in the election whose qualification as to age, citizenship or residence was attained since October 27th. Hours: 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM.

Connecticut allows for Election Day Registration (EDR), so if you have not registered to vote in Trumbull by October 27th it is still possible to come into Town Hall on Election Day — between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM to register and vote. Persons wishing to do so must have a valid I.D. and current proof of Trumbull residency. Please plan to arrive early in the day. There is no Election Day Registration at regular polling places.

Proof of Identity and Residence: • A current and valid Connecticut driver's license or non-driver DMV photo ID

Proof of Identity: • Birth certificate • Social Security card • Current student photo ID from higher education institution • Testimony of another elector (such as husband or wife or parent)

Proof of Residence: any of the following documents showing current residence:  • Connecticut DMV learner’s permit • Residential lease • Utility bill (including a cell phone bill) due not later than 30 days after Election Day • Current college/university student registration or fee statement • Current bank statement (within 30 days) • Naturalization documents • Government check or other government document

All four polling locations in Trumbull will be open for in-person voting from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM on November 3rd.  Social distancing and sanitizing measures will be in place. Poll workers will be wearing face coverings and plexiglass will be placed at the poll workers’ tables to protect both the poll workers and the voters. Masks are required in all public places including polling locations.

There are 3 questions regarding the revision of the Trumbull Town Charter on the November 3rd ballot. For more information about these questions please visit the Town website https://www.trumbull-ct.gov/DocumentCenter/View/4506/Explanatory-Text-for-Three-Charter-Revision-Questions-on-the-November-3-2020-General-Election-Ballot-PDF  or you can contact the Town Clerk’s office at 203- 452-5037.

Absentee Ballot Process Information

  • If you will be voting by absentee ballot a completed and signed Absentee Ballot Application must be filed with the Town Clerk before a ballot is issued.
  • Ordinary Absentee Ballot requests end on November 2nd, but in an emergency Absentee Ballots can be accepted and will be processed on November 3rd. Please call the Town Clerk's Office at 203-452-5037 for more information.
  • If you are voting by absentee ballot please remember to sign the inner envelope before you return your absentee ballot and read the instructions carefully to make sure your vote counts.
  • Voters should complete their absentee ballots and return them to the Town Clerk's Office as soon as possible to ensure they are received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. Ballots returned after that date and time will not be counted.
  • Completed ballots can be returned to the Trumbull Town Clerk at 5866 Main Street, Trumbull, CT 06611 via the United States Postal Service, or in person in the Town Clerk's office, or by dropping the ballot off in one of the secure ballot drop boxes located outside of Town Hall or the Trumbull Police Station.
  • The best way to ensure that your votes are counted is to use the drop boxes. If you return the ballot to the drop boxes you may submit them at any time up until 8pm on November 3rd and they will be processed and counted.
  • You may vote in person even if you've applied for, and received, an absentee ballot. Your name is not marked off as an absentee voter until you've returned the absentee ballot to the Town Clerk.

Absentee Ballot Counting Information

The Town Clerk's office is responsible for processing applications for Absentee Ballots, sending ballots to approved voters, and receiving completed ballots. The Elections Administration (Registrar of Voters) administers elections and counts ballots for all voters, including absentee ballots.

When the Town Clerk receives the absentee ballot, they check that the serial number and barcode match the voter who returned the ballot, and then they secure the absentee ballot, still sealed in its envelope, until Election Day.

For absentee ballots that are received prior to Election Day, the Town Clerk's pre-mark the Election Day checklist to indicate that the voter returned an absentee ballot. Voters who return their absentee ballot prior to Election Day will not be allowed to vote in a polling place on Election Day.

If an absentee ballot arrives on Election Day, it is held until after 8:00 pm when the absentee ballot is compared to the official Election Day checklist. If the voter who returned the absentee ballot on Election Day has voted in person in a polling place, the absentee ballot is not opened and is rejected. This procedure ensures that no voter can vote twice, even by mistake.

Please visit the Town website for more information or you can call the Town Clerk's office at 203-452-5037, the Registrars' office at 203-452-5058 or 203-452-5059, or my office at 203-452-5005.

Stay safe and stay well.

Thanks for listening.
