[ARCHIVED] Trumbull Health Department Weekly COVID-19 Update: 9/09/21

Public Health - Prevent, Promote, Protect (JPG)

  • Vaccines provide a strong disease-fighting advantage, but they don’t make you immune to infection.
  • The COVID-19 vaccines were never designed to prevent infection; they were designed to protect your airways and prevent severe disease.
  • The COVID-19 vaccines are working the way they were intended.
  • Breakthrough COVID-19 cases are more common because infections are more common.
  • With the start of the school year, Connecticut is seeing an increase in COVID-19 infections among students.
  • The Trumbull Health Department reminds all residents to remain vigilant in protecting themselves, family and loved ones.
    1. Practice social distancing
    2. Limit large indoor gatherings
    3. Wash hands frequently.  In lieu of soap and water, use a hand sanitizing solution
    4. Wear masks properly (make sure mask covers the nose and mouth)
    5. Adhere to state/local mandates
    6. Consider getting vaccinated.
  • The Trumbull Health Department continues to offer COVID-19 vaccinations.  Both the Moderna vaccine (approved for those 18 and older) and Pfizer vaccine (approved for those 12 and older) are available.  Call 203-638-5230 for an appointment today if you are interested.
  • Additional Dose Vaccinations

    • Also available, are “additional dose” COVID-19 vaccinations (Pfizer and Moderna) for those who are immunocompromised. An additional dose of vaccine is a dose administered when the immune response to a standard primary vaccine series is likely not be protective.

    • People are considered moderately to severely immunocompromised if they are/have:
      • Active treatment for solid tumor or hematologic malignancies
      • Receipt of solid-organ transplant and taking immunosuppressive therapy
      • Receipt of CAR-T cell or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (within two years of transplantation or taking immunosuppression therapy)
      • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (e.g., DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
      • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
      • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids (i.e., >20mg prednisone or equivalent per day), alkylating agents, antimetabolites, transplant-related immunosuppressive drugs, cancer chemotherapeutic agents classified as severely immunosuppressive, tumor-necrosis (TNF) blockers, and other biologic agents that are immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory.
  •  While a provider referral is not required to receive an “additional dose” of a COVID vaccine, it is highly recommended that you consult with your healthcare provider in making a joint decision about your receiving and the timing of your additional dose.

  • By receiving an additional dose, you are attesting that you meet the above status of moderately to severely immunocompromised and understand the importance of speaking with your healthcare provider.

  • Update on COVID-19 Booster Shots

    • A booster dose of vaccine is a dose administered to restore protection after the effectiveness of protection from the primary series has declined.
    • At this time, boosters have not been approved by the FDA, ACIP, or CDC.
    • Currently, they under review and a decision is expected to be made by September 20.
    • DPH will review further guidance when it is issued by FDA and ACIP about a booster program for CT residents.
  • Vaccine recipients can now access immunizations records!

    • Vaccine recipients can now access immunization records through the secure CT WiZ Public Portal, a free service provided by the CT DPH Immunization Program.
      1. Vaccine recipients and legal guardians can access official immunization records for themselves and their children if they are under the age of 18 using the CT WiZ Public Portal with ‘two-factor authentication’ to verify identity.
    • Recipients won’t find the record if the contact information does not match what the provider reported to CT WIZ. If they are unable to locate their record in the portal, they can contact the DPH Immunization Program for assistance (helpdesk: https://dph-cthelpdesk.ct.gov/Ticket or phone: 860-509-7929 during business hours Mon-Fri 8:30am-4:30pm).
