Statement From First Selectman Vicki Tesoro

THE TRUMBULL TOWN COUNCIL VOTES TO RESTORE POLICE PENSION

Last evening, Monday, November 27, 2023, the Trumbull Town Council voted unanimously to restore a defined benefit pension plan for officers hired on or after July 1, 2014. Officers hired before July 1, 2014, were grandfathered under the previous defined benefit plan, and will remain covered under that plan.

First Selectman Vicki Tesoro said, “This action was taken after careful consideration of all alternatives and will put us in a strong position to hire new officers. Many individuals were involved in this effort, and I want to thank them all, in particular Chief of Police, Michael Lombardo, the Trumbull Police Union and Trumbull Director of Human Resources, Thomas McCarthy, for bringing this plan to fruition.”

The hiring market for police officers remains very competitive with most municipalities struggling to hire qualified officers. The restoration of this pension coupled with a new aggressive strategy to attract qualified officers to our Town are important steps in ensuring that our  police department has the officers it needs to keep our town a safe community.

First Selectman Tesoro stated, “Trumbull is a very safe community. And while crime statistics are down significantly since I took office, we can’t rest on our laurels. My administration remains committed to seeing that our outstanding police department has the resources – staff, equipment, and training – they need to keep our wonderful Town a safe community for our residents and our businesses. The restoration of this pension plan is an important element in doing just that.”
