For several years, the Town of Trumbull has taken an innovative approach to the town’s road improvement plan using pavement preservation techniques in addition to traditional road paving. These road improvement applications consist of crack sealing and, beginning in 2024, a process known as “Chip Sealing.” The strategy is to treat stable roads as explained below and extend their life by 5 to 7 years. This preventative maintenance technique allows us to extend the life of some roads, while applying other resources to reconstruct or replace roads that have lost their integrity. Eventually, the goal is to minimize the roads needing more aggressive attention and increase the Pavement Preservation techniques.
For your information, we are sharing this video clip which outlines the Chip Seal process. Our selected contractor, Seymour Sealing Contractors, applies a layer of emulsion, followed by a layer of stone, which is then rolled. Within a few days, once the road sets, the town sweeps the road thoroughly. Two to three weeks later, a final coat of emulsion, called Fog Seal, is applied to create a durable bond to the existing roadway. This process will look like a newly paved street.
Other area towns that use Chip Sealing to extend the life of their roads include Fairfield, Shelton, and Easton.
