This statement is in response to rumors about increased sewer costs. Here are the facts.
- There is no new sewer construction project planned or considered for Trumbull. NONE.
- The prior administration negotiated the terms of a sewer use contract with Bridgeport in 2016 which the Tesoro administration inherited. We are legally required to abide by it or we can leave the system after the development of an alternate system.
- The sewer contract extends for 4 more years. The contract specifies the method for the charges for our use of the Bridgeport sewer plant. Bridgeport cannot simply send us a bill for the cost of the upgrades to their sewer plant.
- Under the contract, Trumbull is a user of the Bridgeport sewer system and as such we are charged the same basic rate as all other users of the Bridgeport system.
- Trumbull has conducted detailed engineering studies of possible options to using the Bridgeport system and they have been rejected as overly expensive. The Trumbull WPCA will continue to negotiate the most favorable terms available for Trumbull taxpayers.
- Bridgeport will have to upgrade its sewer system. They will receive significant sums of money in State and Federal grants to offset the cost and they will bond what is not covered by grants. The effect on user rates is presently unknown.
