[ARCHIVED] 04/19/2020 COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 (JPG)

Good Evening,

This is First Selectman Vicki Tesoro with an important update:

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Trumbull as of today is 206. There are now 16 Trumbull residents who have passed away. Our numbers are still increasing. The peak in CT is expected to occur between April 27 and May 10.

As I said yesterday, Governor Lamont issued an order requiring cloth face coverings or face masks in public. The order goes into effect tomorrow, Monday, April 20 at 8 P.M. Please visit the Town website for more information.

For businesses, we are closely monitoring the status of recovery resources including the Paycheck Protection Program. If you have applied for this program or are in the process of applying and are concerned about the status of this program or any other resource, please contact Rina Bakalar, Director of Economic and Community Development at 203-452-5043 or email at rbakalar@trumbull-ct.gov

Unfortunately, in these difficult times we need to make difficult decisions. Last week I laid off 30 part time Town of Trumbull employees who are not able to work from home to deliver Town services. It is the financially prudent action to take for the Town, however it is a decision I thought I would never have to make. These employees will be able to apply for unemployment and I look forward to restaffing the Town when we get through this crisis.

Anyone in Trumbull who has lost their job and needs information about unemployment benefits, please contact the State Department of Labor. Please check the Town website for more information.

If you or your family needs assistance in the meantime, please reach out to our Social Services Department at 203-452-5136.

On April 1st, the Governor released an order that requires each community to adopt a tax relief program that offers deferment options to local residents. The Town Council will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 PM to adopt the town’s tax relief program. Of the available choices, it is my recommendation that the Town Council approve the deferment program that gives all of our taxpayers, residents and businesses, the ability to defer their local property taxes.

The Board of Finance will vote on the Town Budget for the next fiscal year on Wednesday, April 22. We know many of our residents and businesses are suffering during this crisis and it is our intent to lessen the municipal tax burden to the lowest extent possible while maintaining our critical Town services. I am working with the Board of Finance and the Town Council to do just that.

Our next virtual Town Hall meeting will be on Thursday, April 23 at 3 PM. More information will be available soon.

Please stay safe, stay well, and stay home.

Thank you for listening.
