[ARCHIVED] Trumbull Charter Revision Commission 2020 to Hold Second Public Hearing on June 24, 2020

Town of Trumbull Seal

The Trumbull Charter Revision Commission 2020 will hold its second online public hearing on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. The Commission previously held a public hearing on April 15, 2020, prior to beginning work on the revision. The Town Council initiated a revision of the town Charter at its meeting on March 2, and the Commission is required to submit its draft report to the Town Council by June 29.

Under state law, the Charter Revision Commission must hold a second public hearing after completion, but before submission, of its draft report to the Town Council. The Commission’s draft report, a summary of the draft report, and a redlined Charter showing the proposed changes, are posted on the Commission’s page on the town website, https://www.trumbull-ct.gov/765/Charter-Revision-Commission-2020. The draft report was based on input from the public, including the League of Women Voters of the Bridgeport Area, as well as from town officials and employees. Members of the public are invited to review the draft report and give their comments at the public hearing.

The Commission’s recommendations include substantive changes, including changing the terms of office of the First Selectman, Treasurer, and Town Clerk from two to four years; clarifying the process for replacing the First Selectman in the event of absence, disability, etc.; establishing seven voting districts; aligning purchasing policies and procedures with current practice while ensuring key provisions are managed appropriately; expanding the Board of Education to eight members with no more than four members from each party; and adding a Commission on Aging and a Commission on Youth. Other changes are recommended to fix administrative issues, modernize terms, clarify definitions, or bring the Charter into alignment with state statutes.

The public hearing will be conducted via Zoom, and members of the public can participate by viewing or listening to the hearing on their computer, cell phone, or landline. Members of the public who are participating on Zoom can request to speak and make comments to the Commission. The hearing will also be broadcast live on Facebook, although Facebook viewers will not be able to comment. Instructions on how to participate will be posted on the Town website, trumbull-ct.gov. Comments may also be emailed to the clerk of the Commission, Cynthia Katske, at ckatske@trumbull-ct.gov, prior to the hearing.
