Voting on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 General Election
Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Social distancing and sanitizing measures will be in place for those who wish to vote in person at the polls.
All voters are entitled to vote by absentee ballot for the November 3, 2020 General Election by checking the COVID-19 excuse on the absentee ballot application.
Absentee voting in Connecticut is a two-step process. A completed and signed Absentee Ballot Application must be filed with the Town Clerk before a ballot is issued. See instructions below.
The Town Clerk's office is responsible for processing applications for Absentee Ballots, sending ballots to those who have returned an application, and receiving completed ballots.
Can I Vote Absentee?
If you will not be able to make it to the polls on the day of the General Election on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 you are permitted in the State of Connecticut to vote by Absentee Ballot for any of the following reasons:
- All voters are eligible to vote by absentee ballot in the general election held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 due to COVID-19, pursuant to Public Act 20-03 July Spec. Sess. Just check the COVID-19 box on the application.
If you answer yes to any of the questions below you are also eligible to vote by absentee ballot:
- Are you an active member of the armed forces of the United States?
- Will you be out of town during all the hours of voting on Election Day?
- Does illness prevent you from voting in person on Election Day?
- Do your religious beliefs prevent you from performing secular activities like voting on Election Day?
- Will you be performing duties as an election official at a polling place other than your own during all the hours of voting on Election Day?
- Do you have a physical disability that prevents you from voting in person on Election Day?
Connecticut does not participate in Early Voting. In order to vote absentee you must meet one of the criteria listed above.
Students away at college or away from home can apply to vote absentee. Students can enter their school mailing address on the absentee ballot application and the ballot will be mailed to them. If your college has been cancelled and you have to return home, email the Town Clerk (firstname.lastname@example.org) with Change of Address in subject line to change the mailing address for the absentee ballot back to the home address.
Emergency ballots within 6 days of an election are available for unforeseen illness or physical disability, or to a person admitted to the hospital.
The emergency ballot requires the assistance of a "designee" who will deliver the application and return the ballot on behalf of the voter.
Completing the Application for Absentee Ballots for the November 3, 2020 Election
The Secretary of the State mailed absentee ballot applications to all registered voters in September.
- These absentee ballot applications are prepopulated with the voter’s personal information and they contain a unique barcode, so only that voter is able to use the application.
- These applications came with a postage paid envelope for returning the application.
- Completed applications can be returned to the Trumbull Town Clerk at 5866 Main Street, Trumbull, CT 06611 via the United States Postal Service, or in person in the Town Clerk’s office, or by dropping the application off in one of the secured ballot drop boxes located outside of Town Hall or the Trumbull Police Station.
- Absentee ballot applications are also available by visiting Town Hall and requesting an application from the greeter at the front desk, or calling the Town Clerk’s office at (203) 452-5037, or by downloading the application at https://portal.ct.gov/SOTS/Election-Services/Voter-Information/Absentee-Voting
- If you have already filed an Application for an Absentee Ballot, you do not need to complete the application sent to you by the Secretary of State. This especially applies to college students who have already submitted their completed applications with their school address to which the ballot will be mailed.
Absentee ballots will be distributed beginning on October 2, 2020
Beginning on Friday, October 2, 2020, absentee ballots will be mailed by the Trumbull Town Clerk’s office to those who have returned an application.
Filling Out and Returning the Ballot
It is imperative that voters complete their ballots and return them to ensure they are received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Ballots returned after that date and time will not be counted.
- Absentee Ballots may be returned as soon as they are received.
- The ballot is the colored paper with the candidates listed. To vote, completely fill in the circle next to the candidate's name you wish to vote for.
- There are also 3 ballot questions to be completed. Explanatory text for these questions is included with the ballot.
- When completed, the ballot should be placed into the enveloped marked "B". Seal the envelope, sign your name, and enter the date.
- Place envelope "B" into the outer envelope marked "C". Seal the envelope and write your return address on the front.
- The ballot will come with a postage paid envelope for returning the ballot.
- Completed ballots can be returned to the Trumbull Town Clerk at 5866 Main Street, Trumbull, CT 06611 via the United States Postal Service, or in person in the Town Clerk’s office, or by dropping the ballot off in one of the secured ballot drop boxes located outside of Town Hall or the Trumbull Police Station.
- Voters are urged to use the drop boxes to be sure their votes are counted.
- A ballot returned by someone other than the voter must be signed and dated on the back, and noted with the relationship to the voter.
- Adults (over the age of 18) may return someone else's ballot.
- A child (under the age of 18) may not return someone's ballot.
