Weekly Update: Week of 8/9/2021

• COVID-19 case rates continue to rise.
• The majority of new infections, hospitalizations, and deaths are occurring in unvaccinated persons.  In Connecticut, the majority of these cases are caused by the Delta variant.
• It is not uncommon to see breakthrough cases in those who have been vaccinated.  In most of these cases, symptoms have been mild and have not resulted in severe illness or hospitalizations.
• The COVID-19 vaccine does not prevent disease.  It does, however, reduce the severity of the disease causing fewer hospitalizations and death.
• Trumbull schools will open on time and will be in-person only.  It will be important to continue monitoring rates of disease among this population as children under 12 are not eligible for vaccine and some over 12 years old have not been vaccinated.
• Teaching your children how to protect themselves is important to help reduce the spread of the virus.  Frequent handwashing, wearing a mask that covers your nose and mouth, and maintaining social distance is important.
• COVID-19 vaccines for children are coming, but studies are needed to provide information to ensure safe and effective vaccinations of this group.
• The best way through this pandemic is together.  News information is being learned daily about this virus and guidance continues to change.  Flexibility is critical.
• COVID-19 vaccinations are available at the Trumbull Health Department. Both the Moderna vaccine (approved for those 18 and older) and Pfizer vaccine (approved for those 12 and older) are available.  Call 203-638-5230 for an appointment today if you are interested.  
• At this time, vaccinations are the most effective strategy in combating this illness.  Consider getting vaccinated today!
