The Trumbull Police Department is welcoming the addition of one (1) more new police officer recruit to the town’s police force, which increases the number of women on the job to eleven (11). The recruit who was sworn in as a recruit on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 during a ceremony at the Trumbull Police Department at 4:00 P.M. is: Kelly Johnson, age 24 of Shelton, CT
Recruit Johnson will begin her training at the Milford Police Academy in Milford, CT on April 21st where she will participate in classroom instruction, practical skills and physical fitness conditioning. After graduating from the Milford Police Academy in October, she will be required to complete a minimum of 400 hours of Field Training to complete her certifications and prepare her to serve and perform the many duties of a police officer in today’s community. During the Field Training phase the recruit will ride with training officers who will instruct her on department policies, rules and procedures, while exposing her to actual policing by responding to calls for service.
After a lengthy testing process, the selection, background investigations, and training process takes more than eighteen (18) months for a recruit to start working on the road. Recruit Johnson adds to the total amount of officers, but the department still falls short of its authorized strength of eighty-two (82) officers, due to the lengthy process involved with hiring new officers, and retirements of several officers.
The Trumbull Police Department currently has 71 certified officers in its ranks, and are authorized for 82. Recruit Johnson is now the 5th Trumbull Police Recruit to begin their training in a Connecticut Police Academy in recent months, where there are currently two (2) recruits attending the Connecticut Police Academy in Meriden, CT and two (2) other recruits attending the Bridgeport Police Academy in Bridgeport, CT. All five (5) are expected to graduate from their respective academies later this year and will be replacing several officers who have announced their intentions to resign this year.
Trumbull Police are currently looking for qualified applicants to fill the vacancies and bring the staff to its maximum level. The Town of Trumbull is currently accepting applications for both entry-level and POST certified police officers. Further information is available on the Town’s website https://www.trumbull-ct.gov/221/Police and at PoliceApp.com.
