[ARCHIVED] Statement Regarding Security at Trumbull Schools

Town of Trumbull Seal

May 27, 2022

Dear Residents of Trumbull,

Many security measures are in place at our schools and have been for some time. They help to reduce the risk to students, faculty, and those that visit the schools. Some of them are visible, such as police officer(s) assigned to a school, walk and talk details that patrol officers routinely conduct, school security guards in every school, and enhanced security measures, such as target hardening capital improvements to the facilities. Since the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas on Wednesday we have added more protections at the schools and increased the police presence as well.

On a regular basis, timed drills are practiced at each school In town, which will help our students and faculty remain as safe as they can in the event a situation does arise that requires them to react.

In addition, very recently, school administrators, police officers, emergency management, fire, health and others participated in an exercise with a scenario that would require a large-scale response to a school in town. The purpose was to test our current response mechanisms, determine how to improve upon them, and debrief our collective responses.

The First Selectman, Police Chief and the Superintendent of Schools do meet and discuss what can be done to enhance school security. In fact, yesterday morning a meeting was held to review our safety plans in place and what can be done to improve upon them.

The security of our students and staff is our utmost priority.

Vicki A. Tesoro, First Selectman

Michael Lombardo, Chief of Police

Martin J. Semmel, Superintendent
