PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Black History Month is a time to honor and celebrate the rich heritage, achievements, and contributions of African Americans to the history, culture, and progress of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the observance of Black History Month originated from the vision of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who founded Negro History Week in 1926, which later evolved into a month-long celebration to ensure that the vital role of African Americans is recognized and remembered; and
WHEREAS, African Americans have played a pivotal role in shaping our nation's history through leadership, innovation, cultural contributions, and a steadfast pursuit of justice and equality, despite facing centuries of systemic oppression and discrimination; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month provides an opportunity for all citizens to reflect on the sacrifices, triumphs, and resilience of African Americans throughout history, from the abolition of slavery and the civil rights movement to the ongoing efforts to combat racial inequality; and
WHEREAS, this month also encourages us to recognize the diversity within the Black community and to appreciate the creative, intellectual, and economic contributions that continue to enrich our society; and
WHEREAS, the celebration of Black History Month underscores the importance of fostering greater understanding, respect, and unity, inspiring current and future generations to continue the pursuit of justice and equity for all people;
WHEREAS, I call upon all citizens to join me in celebrating the achievements and contributions of African Americans, reflecting on the lessons of history, and continuing the important work of building a just and inclusive society.
NOW THEREFORE I, Vicki A. Tesoro, by virtue of the authority vested in me as First Selectman of the Town of Trumbull, Connecticut do hereby proclaim February 2025 as Black History Month.
