[ARCHIVED] 4/6/2016 - Pneumovax and Shingles Vaccines from the Trumbull Health Department

Pneumovax vaccine

The Trumbull Health Department is now offering Pneumovax vaccine also known as PPSV23. The Pneumovax vaccine is recommended for all adults 65 years or older. 

Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria that can spread from person to person through close contact. It can cause ear infections, and it can also lead to more serious infections of the:
• Lungs (pneumonia),
• Blood (bacteremia), and
• Covering of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis). Meningitis can cause deafness and brain damage, and it can be fatal

For an appointment to get your vaccine, or for more information about any of the vaccines the Trumbull Health Department, call (203) 452-1030. The Pneumovax vaccine is covered by Medicare Part B. Please bring your insurance cards and a valid driver license/State ID with you.

Shingles Vaccine

Shingles Vaccine is also now available. If you had chickenpox as a child the Trumbull Health Department recommends you receive the shingles vaccine. Currently in the U.S., 1 million people get shingles every year and about one out of every three people will get shingles in their lifetime. Shingles, also known as zoster or herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox you are at risk of getting shingles. The vaccine is recommended for those who are 60 years of age or older.
