[ARCHIVED] 3/8/2016 - Low Cost Cholesterol Screening now available at the Trumbull Health Department

LOW COST CHOLESTEROL SCREENING NOW AVAILABLE AT THE TRUMBULL HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The Trumbull Health Department wants you to know your numbers. Low-cost cholesterol screenings are now available at the Trumbull Health Department. Blood cholesterol testing is offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00am – 10:00am. Along with your cholesterol we will also check your blood pressure. This is fasting test which means no food or beverages (other than water) for eight hours before the test. Medication can be taken as usual. If you are on diabetic medication, check with your doctor as to taking or delaying these medications until after the test.

This blood test will provide you with your cholesterol levels within minutes. The Trumbull public health nurse will review the results and provide steps that you can take to prevent or reduce high cholesterol levels. The lipid profile screening offered includes total, LDL and HDL cholesterol levels, blood sugar and triglyceride levels.

According to the American Heart Association too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to heart disease. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States and the number 1 killer of women in America. Over 2,100 Americans die of heart disease each day, an average of one death every 40 seconds.

The good news is you can take steps to lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by getting your cholesterol checked, following a healthy diet, exercise regularly and consulting with your doctor. The Trumbull Health Department wants to remind you of the importance of knowing not only your cholesterol number but your blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index (BMI). We recommend that you inform your doctor of your results.

Contact the Trumbull Health Department at 203-452-1030 to make an appointment and for the cost of the screening. This test is by appointment only.
