[ARCHIVED] First Selectman Herbst Names Coleen Figliuzzi New Director of Nursing

FIRST SELECTMAN HERBST NAMES COLEEN FIGLIUZZI NEW DIRECTOR OF NURSING

Connecticut native will replace Judith Locke and assume her new duties on March 18, 2013

February 22, 2013 - First Selectman Timothy M. Herbst on Friday announced the appointment of Coleen Figliuzzi as the new Director of Nursing for the Town of Trumbull. Mrs. Figliuzzi replaces former Director of Nursing Judith Locke.  “Throughout the interview process, Coleen showed a true passion for school nursing as well as keen compassion for the elderly,” stated First Selectman Herbst.  “Coleen has also demonstrated throughout her career a strong work ethic.  What impressed me the most about Coleen was her proven track record of turning things around for the better.  Coleen has had a tremendous career where she has served as a role model in the area of school nursing.  I believe her breadth of experience will serve the Town of Trumbull well.”  The First Selectman indicated that Figliuzzi impressed the interviewing committee at all levels.

Coleen Figliuzzi, RN, BSN, NCSN, is a Nationally Certified School Nurse with twenty nine years of nursing leadership in a variety of pediatric, hospital and school settings.  Coleen's most recent positions include serving as a Nurse Practice Educator and a Patient and Family Educator at the leading children's hospital in the Midwest.  Ms. Figliuzzi also has eleven years of experience as a school nurse, in both Florida and Ohio.  While serving as school nurse to a large school population in Florida, Coleen was named Palm Beach County's Nurse Educator of the Year.  This accolade was the result of Ms. Figliuzzi’s development of grade level programs related to heath that were used throughout Palm Beach County.  Earlier in her career, Coleen was the Clinical Director of Nursing for one of the first high-tech pediatric home care agencies in the nation.

In addition, Coleen was previously a staff nurse in the pediatric intensive care units at the University of Connecticut, John Dempsey Hospital and at Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.  Throughout her career, Coleen has brought innovative and award winning programs to the school setting. "Serving children and their families is my  passion, so  it is an exciting privilege to now have the opportunity to serve the Trumbull nurses who do that very thing every day," stated Ms. Figliuzzi. “As I indicated to First Selectman Herbst, in my first 100 days as Director of Nursing, I plan on focusing on getting to know the school nurses, the School Superintendent and central office staff, the building principals, and the Board of Education.  This will help me learn first-hand what systems are working well and identify those that need improvement. I will also spend time in all of the schools to show my commitment to the students and to familiarize myself with their needs.”  In addition to supervising the school nurses at the Town’s public and private schools, Ms. Figliuzzi will be responsible for supervising the geriatric nurse at Stern Village and the Trumbull Senior Center.

A 1984 graduate of Fairfield University, where she earned a B.S. in Nursing, Coleen and her husband, both Connecticut natives, are excited to return to their home state.  They are the parents of two adult sons.
