FIRST SELECTMAN TIMOTHY M. HERBST ANNOUNCES
DAY OF REMEMBRANCE IN TRUMBULL TO MARK 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
OF 9-11 TERRORIST ATTACKS
First Selectman will conclude the day in Hartford, where he will participate in a memorial service at his alma mater, Trinity College
First Selectman Timothy M. Herbst has announced a day of remembrance in Trumbull on Sunday, September 11, 2011 to mark the 10 year anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks against the United States. “It is hard to believe that ten years have passed since the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the United States. While the world is safer than it was ten years ago, all Americans must be mindful that the world is not yet free from evil. The United States of America has a moral obligation to ensure that this country remains the hope of the Earth. As we take this opportunity to remember the fallen, we must reflect on the past and have faith in our future.”
Nearly 3,000 victims died in the attacks, the worst terrorist attack in the nation’s history. Among the 2,753 victims who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center were 343 firefighters and 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority, and 8 private emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Another 184 people were killed in the attack on the Pentagon. The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 70 countries.
The First Selectman will be joined by the Town Clerk and the Town Treasurer on the Town Hall Green at 8:46 AM and 9:03 AM, when they will lay wreaths to commemorate those that lost their lives 10 years ago. At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower, followed by United Airlines Flight 175, which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m. After the wreaths are laid, the Town will observe two minutes of silence.
Thereafter, the First Selectman, Chief of Police and other Town officials will attend the Blue Mass Ceremony at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport. The Blue Mass pays honor to emergency service personnel who lost their lives 10 years ago.
The 11th Annual CT United Ride, Connecticut’s largest 9-11 tribute, will be held later that day. The ride will go through Trumbull along Main Street. The First Selectman and other Town officials will be at the Trumbull Long Hill Fire Station to observe the ride pass through Trumbull.
Thereafter, the First Selectman will lead the Town in a day of remembrance and prayer at St. Stephens Church. Bishop Lori will be in attendance. All residents of all faiths are invited to attend the hour long service.
The First Selectman will conclude the day by traveling to Hartford, where he will attend a September 11th Memorial Service at his alma mater, Trinity College (Class of 2002). On September 11, 2001, First Selectman Herbst was in his senior year at Trinity College and president of the student body. After comments from Trinity College President Jim Jones, First Selectman Herbst will read the names of all Trinity alumni and friends of the college who perished on September 11, 2011. The service will take place in the Trinity College Chapel and the college carillonneur will toll the bell in the tower once for each alumni who died. “Like all Americans, I will never forget where I was and what I was doing when I first learned of the attacks ten years ago. On Sunday, September 11, 2011 I will travel back to where I was 10 years ago to pay my respects to my fellow alumni who perished in the terrorist attacks.”
