Town Purchases Grace Church PropertyThe Town of Trumbull is purchasing the former Grace Episcopal Church property located at 5958 Main Street in Trumbull. This strategic acquisition aims to prevent the potential construction of a high-density development and gives the town control over future development of that property. The acquisition of the Grace Church property is a proactive measure to control development and uphold the community standards that Trumbull residents value. It is important to note, just as in the purchase of the Hardy Lane property by the town in 2020, that the Grace Church property is not being purchased for open space purposes. Adding this property to the town's land inventory not only prevents unwanted development but also provides an opportunity for thoughtful community use. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend the purchase of the property to the Town Council at its meeting on Wednesday, June 26 and the Town Council voted to approve the purchase at its meeting on Monday, July 1, 2024. The Grace Church property, not available until now, provides another possible town location for the Senior/Community Center that should be considered by the Community Facilities Building Committee. First Selectman Tesoro intends to ask the building committee to explore this property as a potential site for the new center. For further information, please contact the Office of the First Selectman at (203) 452-5005.

Mary J. Sherlach Counseling Center Ice Cream Social and Open HouseIn honor of May as Mental Health awareness month and to celebrate all that the Mary J. Sherlach center does, an Ice Cream Social and Open House was held. This allowed Trumbull youth and their families an opportunity to get to know the Center and to have a fun family outing. Taking care of one’s mental health is about more than diagnosis, treatment and medication. Taking care of mental health is about practicing self-care and coping strategies. There was an opportunity to meet the staff, take a tour of the facility and learn all about the services that are offered. In addition to free ice cream and popcorn there were team building games and activities led by members of S.L.A.M. (Students leaving a mark). S.L.A.M. was created from a youth leadership training provided by Dylan’s Wings of Change. Dylan’s wings of change is a peer-to-peer leadership development program with a mission to empower courage and inspire hope in order to enhance the lives of all humans. The Mary J. Sherlach center is the Town of Trumbull's Youth Service Bureau. The function of a youth service bureau is to identify the needs of youth and their families and to engage in practices that meet those needs. A large part of how they do that is offer individual, family and group counseling for Trumbull residents. Another part of what they do is provide positive youth development by offering youth positive experiences to foster coping strategies and self-care. The Center is located at 121 old Mine Road, across the street from old Mine Park. For more information, call 203-452-5193.

If you hear thunder or see lightning, take shelter in an enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle with the windows up. Each year in the United States, thunderstorms produce 20-25 million lightning flashes that strike the ground, killing an average of 20+ people and injuring hundreds more - often in devastating and permanent ways. Did you know that lightning is hotter than the surface of the Sun? Stay Weather Ready and learn more lightning science at the National Weather Service's Lightning Science page.

Board of Education District Master Plan and the Hillcrest Building ProjectThe discussion of the town approvals needed for the construction of the new Hillcrest Middle School began in June when the Board of Finance at its June 13 meeting approved a bond authorization in the amount of $142,375,000 for the construction of the new school. In accordance with the Charter of the Town of Trumbull, a referendum vote must be held for the issuance of bonded debt for all town projects exceeding $15 million. The referendum question for this project is expected to be on the November 5, 2024 general election ballot. The actual cost of the project will be much less than the bonding request. Due to special legislation approved by the state legislature this past spring, the Hillcrest project will receive a 44% reimbursement rate, which is above the standard reimbursement rate of 24.29%. This is a potential significant cost savings for Trumbull taxpayers. However, the Trumbull voters must approve the referendum question in order for the project to move forward. The Board of Education submitted the grant application for this project to the State of Connecticut on June 27, 2024. The Town Council, at its monthly meeting on July 1, discussed and approved the same bond authorization approved by the Board of Finance. The next step in this process is the creation by the Town Council of the November ballot question language. More information will be provided to the public in the near future about the impact this project will have on town taxpayers and the impact the construction will have on the students, staff, and the area surrounding the school. Please visit the Town website and the Board of Education website for important updates about this project.

Trumbull Police Welcomes Two New OfficersThe Trumbull Police Department recently announced the recent graduation of two new officers who successfully completed the required training leading to their graduation from the Milford Police Academy. The ceremony for Officer Julian Arboleda and Officer Anthony Ormond took place on June 12, 2024. Trumbull Police Recruits Arboleda and Ormond will continue their training in the Field Training phase, where they will ride with training officers who will instruct them on department policies, rules and procedures, while exposing them to actual policing by responding to calls for service. They are required to complete a minimum of 400 hours of Field Training to complete their certifications before they can work on their own. These two new recruits are joining a department that is continuously working to bring the agency up to full staffing levels. Trumbull is currently looking for additional qualified police officer applicants to fill several vacancies and bring the staff to its maximum level. Funding Obtained for Community Gardens in TrumbullThe Town of Trumbull will receive $80,000 for community gardens. The funds will be used to expand Trumbull’s community gardens in Abraham Nichols Park and to establish a new community garden at the Trumbull Senior Center on Pricilla Place. Representative Sarah Keitt (D-Trumbull, Fairfield) worked to obtain the funding through federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. Both areas will have raised beds, be fenced and be friendly for seniors and individuals with disabilities. The grant will fund the establishment of both areas with all necessary materials and labor related to the installation of the gardens. The area in Abraham Nichols Park will include 40-50 new raised beds in a separate area from the existing garden. The area at the Trumbull Senior Center will include 10-20 raised beds. This funding will greatly expand and improve our community gardens in Trumbull. Raised beds and fully accessible gardens will allow all community members an opportunity to utilize a garden. Not only is this a wonderful hobby, but the food is also healthy and can save our residents money on their food bills. I want to thank State Representative Sarah Keitt, who spearheaded this funding for our town. She has been extraordinary in her advocacy for Trumbull projects and residents. The project is a partnership between the Trumbull Parks Department and the Senior Center. The Senior Center will provide programming on gardening, nutrition, and cooking to compliment the community gardens. Community gardens are beneficial for people so they can grow their own food and plants. These gardens increase access to healthy and affordable food for families, reduce food insecurity, and foster social connections with other people using the community garden, among other things. We are thrilled to be adding more community gardens in town.
