First Selectman Vicki Tesoro Sitting at Desk

A Message from First Selectman Vicki A. Tesoro

At the July 10, 2025 Town Council Meeting the Council approved in a bipartisan vote a bond authorization in the amount of $27,115,000 for the proposed new Senior/Community Center.

In accordance with the Town Charter there will be a referendum question on the ballot for the November 4th municipal election, which will allow Trumbull voters to vote yes or no on the proposed question to fund the proposed new Senior/Community Center.

Per the Town Charter the question on the ballot will read as follows:

Shall the proposed bond issue in the amount $27,115,000, as adopted by the Trumbull Town Council on 7/10/2025 be approved?

There will be a community meeting about this project in September to provide information to the public about this project and the referendum process. The date and location of this meeting will be announced shortly.

Please visit the Town website here for updated information about this proposal and referendum question.

The Hillcrest Middle School Building Committee has started the process to build the new middle school. Their meetings as all our Town meetings are open to the public. You can find updates about this project here.

We are pleased to announce that the Tashua Pool renovation is complete, and the pool, the new pool house, and the new splash pad are now open. You can find the pool and splash pad hours here for both Tashua and Beach Pool.

Ribbon cutting at Tashua Pool

Ribbon-Cutting Held at the Newly Renovated Tashua Pool

The Town recently held a ribbon-cutting at the newly renovated Tashua Pool and pool house and the new splash pad. Thank you to all our Town employees who worked so hard on this project!

The project included improvements to the main pool, restrooms, dressing rooms, and concession areas, all of which had exceeded their useful life. Additionally, the former children’s pool was converted into a splash pad, providing a safer and more engaging space for younger swimmers. Tashua Pool serves hundreds of residents each summer and is also a key location for swim instruction programs that help young children build confidence in the water and promote lifelong water safety skills. This investment ensures the facility remains safe, functional, and accessible for years to come.

You can find the hours of operation of the Tashua Pool and splash pad on the Parks and Recreation page of the town website.

Trumbull Center Update

On Friday, July 11 at 4:30pm, the State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) issued a report to Trumbull Center, LLC regarding their review of potential asbestos contamination at 934 and 940 White Plains Road.  This review was launched after a local resident filed a complaint with DEEP regarding concerns that hazardous building materials were potentially present at this site.

The principals of Trumbull Center, LLC provided required paperwork to DEEP regarding the previous abatement of hazardous building materials and the disposal of such materials prior to demolition.  DEEP has reviewed this paperwork and conducted further testing on site to determine the extent of the situation.  At this time, we are pleased to be informed that the DEEP requires no further action or clean up on site.

The report states, “With respect to Emergency Response and Spill Prevention Division’s (“ERSPD”) involvement and collection of fourteen (14) samples of solid waste, which were collected to determine if any remaining materials contained asbestos at the Site. DPH’s analytical results indicated one (1) of the fourteen (14) samples collected tested positive for the presence of asbestos. Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division (WEED) finds the one (1) sample to be an anomalous result and not sufficient to warrant further action.”

As was noted previously by DEEP, the public was not at any risk based on the conditions at the site. We do thank DEEP for their thorough review of the conditions in Trumbull Center. The safety of the public and protection of our environment is paramount. We thank the principals of Trumbull Center, LLC., for cooperating throughout the process.

As this situation concludes, we have been informed from the principals, the front landscaping and pocket park installation will get underway as well as some paving around the area.  This improvement is part of the larger redevelopment plan approved by Trumbull Land Use Boards.

E-Bike and Bicycle Safety PSA

Electric bikes (E-bikes) and bicycles are becoming more popular—especially among young riders—but with that popularity comes increased risk. Serious and even fatal crashes are on the rise, most involving motor vehicles and children.

The Trumbull Police Department urges all riders and drivers to stay alert and follow Connecticut laws to help prevent these avoidable tragedies.

RIDERS: STAY SAFE, STAY SEEN

• Always wear a helmet — it’s the law for riders under 18 and a life-saving choice for everyone.

• Ride with traffic, obey all signs, and signal your turns.

• Electric bikes are nearly silent — pedestrians and drivers may not hear you coming. Stay alert and slow down.

• Wear proper gear — bright or reflective clothing, secure footwear, and no loose items that can get caught.

• Avoid distractions — do NOT ride while texting, using your phone, or wearing headphones or earbuds.

• Use lights and reflectors, especially when riding at night or in low-light conditions.

• No passengers unless your e-bike is designed for it.

MOTORISTS: STAY ALERT & SHARE THE ROAD

• Watch for children — especially near parks, schools, and neighborhoods.

• Slow down and give cyclists space — state law requires at least 3 feet when passing.

• Accidents involving e-bikes and kids are rising — many with life-altering consequences.

• Be cautious at intersections and driveways.

• Never drive distracted — a moment’s inattention can lead to tragedy.

Let’s work together to protect every rider—especially our youth. Safety starts with awareness, patience, and respect for the rules of the road.

Paths and plantings at Long Hill Green

Long Hill Green Project Update

Green space improvements are nearing completion in Long Hill Green. The area has been re-graded, new planting beds have been established, trees are planted, and the permeable sidewalk installation is complete.  The sidewalks are an expansion of the green infrastructure roadway and parking areas previously installed.  This area captures storm water and pollutants protecting the Pequonnock River and Long Island Sound.

Sod installation will occur over the next week.  Perennial plantings, benches, and signage will be installed in the coming weeks. All improvements are part of the Long Hill Green Village District Plan adopted in 2018.  Funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Connecticut Department of Transportation Community Connectivity Program, and 1,000 Trees for Trumbull have contributed to the improvements. Watch for information about a ribbon-cutting in the fall once the project is completed!

Trumbull Recognized for Leadership in Aging Services with New Focal Point Designation

Congratulations to The Trumbull Senior Center for being recognized as a Community Focal Point by the Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging (SWCAA). This important recognition celebrates the exceptional programs, services, and support provided by our dedicated staff and volunteers, with the strong backing of the Town of Trumbull.

This recognition highlights the strength of our services and community commitment, even amid the challenges posed by our existing facility. While our current building continues to serve as a gathering place, it no longer meets the needs of our growing senior population. The Town is pursuing plans for a new, modern senior center that can fully support the diverse programs and activities our residents deserve.

As defined by the Older Americans Act, a Focal Point is a central, trusted access point for aging and disability services—designed to coordinate and connect older adults with the support they need. It offers seniors and families a reliable place for information, assistance, and community, and stands as a visible symbol of the community’s commitment to its aging population.

“I am deeply proud of the staff, volunteers, community partners, and the Town of Trumbull, whose dedication and support make these vital services possible every day,” said Michele Jakab, Director of Human Services. “While we celebrate this recognition of our programs, we also remain focused on the urgent need for a new senior center building that will better serve our seniors now and into the future.”

The Trumbull Senior Center provides a wide range of services. Please visit the Senior Center website for more information about the Trumbull Senior Center’s programs and services.
