Numerous studies indicate that up to 20% (1 in 5) of children encounter challenges when it comes to learning how to read. Reading skills are crucial to academic achievement. The primary educators during the vital 0-5 early developmental years are parents and caregivers. Our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program is a helpful tool to foster a love of reading and create lifelong readers.

About the program:

The goal of this challenge is to read 1000 books with your child before they start kindergarten. Children can start at any age from birth. Along the way, as they reach different milestones, there will be milestone prizes. Children will receive special stickers for their mini milestones (every 50 books read). For their bigger milestones (250, 500,  and 750), they will have the option of bubbles or a rubber duck. They will collect these prizes at the Children's Circulation desk of either the main or branch library. When they finish the program, your child is invited into the Children's Department to pick out a free book of their choice!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I have to use the online logging system?
No. Please see the "Analog option" section under the "Getting Started" heading.

Do rereads of books count?
Yes!

If I choose to use the analog option, do I have to write down every book?
No, simply come in with the badge tracker and let a staff member know your child reached the next milestone.

Is there an app I can download on my phone/tablet?
Yes! “Beanstack Tracker” is available on the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Getting started:

Pick up a welcome folder in the Children's Department of either the main or branch library to collect all the materials needed to get started! The primary way we will facilitate this challenge is through our Beanstack website/app.

Beanstack Logging:
Visit https://trumbulllibrary.beanstack.org/ to register or download the Beanstack Tracker app. This is the same app that we use for our summer reading program, so if you or your child already have an account, you can just join the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” challenge. Children will receive a badge and incentive for every 50 books read. Badges are automatically triggered in Beanstack when each milestone is earned. Rereads of books do count.

You can also download Beanstack Tracker from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to log reading and complete activities from your mobile device.

Family registration is available. Every child must be registered separately, but you can use the same email address, username, and password for the entire family, even if you have multiple kids in different programs.

Analog option:
In your welcome folder, you have received one badge tracker and one book log. Extra copies of each can be printed using the hyperlinks. The book log is a simple tally chart to track the books read. You are also more than welcome to just use lined notebook paper to track as well, or go by the honor system and let staff know when they reach their next milestones. Rereads of books do count.

Completion Ceremony:
Once your child finishes the challenge, you will be invited to our annual completion ceremony, typically held in August. We welcome you to invite extended family to celebrate your little one’s achievement! We will serve light refreshments and hand out the official completion certificates. If you are using Beanstack, watch out for an email from the Children’s Department with the details of the ceremony. If you are recording on paper, be sure to fill out the “Completion Contact Form” that came in your welcome folder, or print a new one here, so we know how to get in touch with you.
