LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF GREATER BRIDGEPORT
literacyvolunteersofbridgeport@gmail.com
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Bridgeport leverages the power of volunteer tutors to enable adult learners to reach their learning goals. Our students want to learn English, improve their basic reading, writing, and/or math skills, pass the US Citizenship exam, or earn a high school diploma through the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). Thanks to our tutors, our students acquire the literacy skills necessary to succeed as employees, as parents participating in their children’s education, and as members of their community.
Our major need is for volunteer tutors. Our students receive free tutoring in a small group setting, for about two hours per week, provided by adults who generously volunteer their time. The amount of tutoring we can offer depends entirely on the number of tutors we have.
Tutors must be 18 years of age or older, have at least a high school diploma, and speak English fluently. They do not need teaching experience or knowledge of another language — but they should be curious, caring, open to learning about other cultures, and committed to lifelong learning. We provide tutors with training and teaching materials.
