Electric Bicycles

Electric bicycles and scooters are becoming a more popular means of getting around town but it's important to know that these vehicles are subject to the same traffic laws as other motor vehicles.

Important Things to Know

Electric bicycles and scooters do not meet the statutory requirements for registration or insurance and their riders are not required to have a driver's license. However, they must follow all motor vehicle laws. This means that they must ride with traffic and obey signals and signs such as red lights, stop signs and even speed limits. Riders must also signal their turns and ensure that reflectors and lights, if equipped, are functional. Riding recklessly such as weaving through traffic, impeding traffic flow, and riding wheelies are dangerous and can lead to police action in the form of infractions or a summons to court.

Electric bicycles can reach speeds of 28 MPH. Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure the appropriateness of an electric bicycle for their children.

Important Requirements and Recommendations:

Riders and passengers under 16 years old must wear helmets but older riders should also wear a helmet. Eye protection and reflective clothing is recommended for everyone. Riders are encouraged to stay on the roadway or roadway shoulder as sidewalk riding is not permitted by law or town ordinance.
