Glass Recycling

The Town of Trumbull has a separate 'GLASS ONLY' recycling container at the Trumbull Transfer Station!

Under a pilot program designed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), residents can voluntarily bring their glass recyclables to deposit in the GLASS ONLY recycling container.

Please note that the collection container is occasionally removed from the Transfer Station to be emptied. If you do not see the container, please ask.

Accepted glass includes:

  • rinsed glass bottles (redeemable and non-redeemable)
  • food jars
  • wine and liquor bottles

Remove and discard lids, tops and corks.  Metal lids can be recycled with single stream recycling. Loose caps or corks should be put in the trash, not recycling.

Unaccepted items:

  • No: mirrors; window glass; drinking glasses; glass, ceramic, or clay plates, cups, pots or bakeware; lightbulbs

Why Recycle Glass Separately?

While it is convenient to put glass into the blue bin, contamination from non-recyclables can occur from items such as partially filled containers, soggy boxes, plastic bags, and shattered bottles. This can compromise the quality of our recycling resulting in rejected loads that end up in the landfill.

When you separate glass from mixed recycling, each recycling stream is freed from contamination by the other, and the value for each recycled commodity improves.

The majority of Trumbull's glass recycling is transported to Urban Mining in Beacon Falls to be made into Pozzotive, a more sustainable and durable cement product used in many local concrete applications including poured concrete and concrete blocks used in construction.
